The poker scene in Australia continues to gather momentum, with the World Poker Tour confirming its return to Sydney for a major festival set to run from September 10 to 30 at The Star Sydney.

All Eyes on the WPT Prime Australia Championship

Amid the recent revival of the Aussie Millions earlier in May, the attention has now shifted to the upcoming WPT Australia series, which will feature a full slate of tournaments capped by the AUD 5,000 WPT Australia Championship.

Besides the highly anticipated main event, players will also compete in the AUD 1,500 WPT Prime Australia Championship, as well as a wide range of side events, including No Limit Hold’em, Omaha, and bounty formats.

The WPT Prime Australia Championship will run from September 17 to 22, while the flagship WPT Australia Championship will take place from September 24 to 30. Both marquee events are expected to be livestreamed on the WPT YouTube channel.

The festival will also include an AUD 500 Ladies Australian Championship, set for September 15 to 16, adding another highlight to what is expected to be one of the biggest poker gatherings in the region this year.

WPT Chief Executive Officer Adam Pliska expressed content for the tour’s return to Sydney, while praising the country’s strong and passionate poker community as well as the organization’s excitement about reuniting global players.

Pham Won Last Year

Last year’s edition of the WPT Australia Main Event attracted 600 entries and generated a prize pool of nearly 2 million US dollars. Australia’s Alan Pham emerged victorious after defeating fellow countryman Jordan Bautista heads up, securing a career-defining payout of more than AUD 364,000.

The final table was ruled over by Aussie players, reiterating the country’s growing influence in the global poker circuit.

The event also featured strong performances from Jarrod Thatcher, Luo Ming Liu, Corey Kempson, and Jiaxu Chen, all of whom reached the final stages.

Pham’s win marked a milestone moment in his career, pushing his live earnings past the seven figure mark and cementing his status on the regional poker scene.

This year’s WPT season is already well underway, with recent stops producing notable storylines, including NFL Hall of Famer Richard Seymour narrowly missing out on a title at the WPT Seminole Hard Rock Poker Showdown.
