Summary:
- Former NFL star Richard Seymour won the WSOP Circuit High Roller at Harrah’s Cherokee.
- Seymour took home the $106,577 prize and his first gold ring after defeating a field of 234 players.
- The victory is his biggest poker win, bringing him close to $1 million in career live tournament earnings.
Richard Seymour is used to winning championships, but this time around, he did it without wearing his regular helmet and pads.
The former National Football League star grabbed the prestigious $2,200 High Roller event at the World Series of Poker Circuit stop at Harrah’s Cherokee, earning $106,577 and his first WSOP Circuit gold ring.
Close to $500,000 Prize Pool
The tournament drew 234 entries and easily surpassed its $200,000 guaranteed prize pool, building a total of $468,000. The 46-year-old outlasted a tough field that featured plenty of well-versed high roller poker regulars. In the end, he defeated Bradley Butcher heads up, with Butcher taking home $71,039 for second place.
This win marks the biggest poker score of Seymour’s career and his first major live title. Before this, his only recorded tournament victory was a much smaller result worth under $1,000 back in 2018. With this latest result, he is now closing in on $1 million in lifetime live tournament earnings.
Not the Only NFL Player With a Passion for Poker
Seymour built his reputation on the football field long before finding success in poker. He played 12 seasons in the NFL, most notably with the New England Patriots, where he helped anchor a dominant defense.
During his impressive career, he enjoyed no less than three Super Bowl titles and became known as one of the league’s most reliable defensive linemen. He finished his career with 57.5 sacks and nearly 500 tackles.
After retiring following the 2012 season, Seymour stayed connected to competition, eventually turning more seriously to poker. His efforts paid off this week with a six-figure score and a prestigious gold ring.
He is far from the only former NFL player drawn to poker. Others, including Calais Campbell and Lincoln Kennedy, have also become regulars at major events.
For Seymour, though, this win stands out. He already had three Super Bowl rings. Now, he can add a poker ring to the collection.
