Liverpool Player Turns £600 Into £316K Goliath Win

Summary:
- Paul Worsley won the Grosvenor Goliath, defeating a record 12,961-player field.
- Entered the £200 buy-in event with only £600 in his bank account.
- Overcame a 9-to-1 chip deficit heads-up to secure the £316,640 top prize.
On Monday night, a true underdog story unfolded at Grosvenor Casino Coventry, where Liverpool’s Paul Worsley went from nearly quitting poker to winning one of the biggest live tournaments in the world, and banking a life-changing payday.
“I Was Gonna Quit Poker”
Just days earlier, Worsley had only £600 in his account and had been ready to step away from the game for good.
However, with a £200 buy-in, he took a shot at the Grosvenor Goliath no-limit hold’em event, a tournament that drew a record-breaking 12,961 entries, the largest live poker field ever outside Las Vegas.
With total career live earnings of barely $2,000 before this run, Worsley’s expectations were modest. Even making the final table would have meant £17,140, more than enough to ease his financial worries.
Worsley said afterward on the Grosvenor livestream.
I thought if I got to the final nine, I’d be guaranteed fifty grand, and that would be fantastic, and people would chop it. To be honest, this was supposed to be my last ever, like, I was gonna quit poker. I thought I’d come to the Goliath and that’s it, I’m done.
“I Can’t Believe I’ve Won, to Be Honest.”
Once at the final table, the eliminations came quickly. By the time play was three-handed, Worsley had locked up at least £144,800, far beyond anything he had imagined.
A brief pause followed the fourth-place bustout as the remaining players discussed a deal, but talks fell apart when chip leader Thomas Clack asked for more than the others were willing to concede.
Shortly after, Worsley found himself on the wrong end of a big pot when Clack’s rivered pair sent Vasilica Luca out in third place for £144,800, leaving Worsley with a short stack heads-up against Clack’s massive 9-to-1 lead.
However, the match quickly turned. Worsley chipped away at Clack’s advantage and, within 30 minutes, had taken control.
The final hand saw Clack shove with 9♠7♠, only for Worsley to call with 10♣9♣. The board ran J♥9♥3♥A♠10♠, giving Worsley two pair and the £316,640 top prize. Clack settled for £217,500.
Worsley said, still in shock,
I can’t believe I’ve won, to be honest. I’m speechless. I was saying I’ve got 600 pounds in my bank.
Now, with more than half a million dollars in career earnings and the Goliath title under his belt, Paul Worsley’s poker journey has taken a dramatic turn, and quitting is likely off the table.
